Fashion Flash logoThis week  Staness of  Menopause Makeover is hosting Fashion Flash.  This upbeat and  supportive site offers valuable and reassuring wellness advice for the changes that come with “The Change”.   While those days are behind me, I love Menopause Makeover for its delicious  AND healthy recipes.  Her turkey chili  is my go-to dish that I bring to Superbowl parties.  I have to admit that I’m not a big fan of fish, but her fish recipes  which  also feature   nutrient packed  vegetables  are so tasty it makes it easy to get in those two weekly  servings  of  Omega 3’s.   It  makes life  very pleasant when a dish of Panko Coated Tilapea, Louisiana Cafishfish with corn and okra and and  Asian Tuna Kebobs are as healthy as they are  enjoyable.    Too many recipes in magazines seem to be created  just to fill up pages.  By contrast  the recippes in   Menopause Makeover have been carefully  tested and tasted  before they  are published.  Nice.

Menopause and its little cousin peri-menopause, create a tsunami of physical and emotional issues that can last more than a decade.   To provide comprehensive health support, woman’s health expert and  cardiologist Dr Nieca Goldberg is developing a new comprehensive  Menopause Program at the  NYU Langone Center for Women’s Health.  The goal will be to provide  unique support for the symptoms, health care and treatment options.  To make sure that the services truely meet  our needs, Dr Goldberg,  who is the Director of the NYU Langone Center for Women’s Health ,   has organized  a pair  focus groups in Manhattan on April 25 and April30th.  If you are between the ages of 44-59, come to a dinner to explore  how menopause and peri-menopause affects  you with symptoms that include  irritability, anxiety, hot flashes and sleep problems– and  what services you would want  to see in an effective program.   For more information contact Staci Weininger at Staci.weininger@nyumc.org.

FF1This  week the host of Fashion Flash  is Staness of Menopause Makeover. In addition to timely medical  advice and a great  health calculator and record keeper,   IMO Staness has some of the best low calorie recipes on the web.  This week I was looking for something to bring to a Super Bowl Party on Feb  3 that would not lower  the life expectancy of  the assembled sports fans.  Standard Super Bowl buffets  usually feature buffalo wings with blue cheese dressing, nachos with cheese and meat and every kind of chip on the planet.   I road tested the turkey chili recipe  from Staness and  it was perfect.  According to Staness, the  heat from  the  chili peppers increase   metabolism so that I actually burn calories as I eat it.  This chili is also  high in iron ( from the turkey) and in vitamin C ( from the tomatoes, peppers and chili).  Now I have to decide if  I’m even going to even  mention that  it  was low fat, low  salt  and  just all around wonderful for the body.

This week I am also  so excited to introduce our  newest  Fashion Flash blogger– Barbara Hannah Gufferman, author of  The Best of Everything  After 50:  The Experts GuideGUFFERMAN to Style, Sex, Health, Money and More.   She interviewed top experts including  Diane Furstenberg ( fashion), Frederic Fekkai ( hair) and Dr Patricia Wexler ( skin) to come up with ideas  of the best and the brightest to deal with issues that affect  50 plus women.

In addition she   has  a weekly front page column on Huffington Post, is the Chief Pundit  for Fabulous Over Fifty and is a regular contributor to AARP.   Barbara has appeared on The Today Show, and Good Morning  America and is a regular on NPR, Dr Oz Sirius Radio and the Oprah Channel.  Last  year the National Osteoporosis Foundation  honored her for her outspoken support  of  women’s health.

In recognition of  Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr Howard Murad is offering Hydrate for Hope,  an awesome pink makeup bag stuffed with nighttime moisturizer and eye cream– and 10% of  purchase price will be donated to City  of Hope for breast cancer research.  Over the years, Dr Murad has donated over $1,000,000 to research for breast cancer prevention and cure.    And eash time you “like” a Murad Facebook fan  page or tweet about a Murad product, this comitted company will donate $1.00 to cancer  care programs at City of Hope.  How easy  is that.

Dr Murad  was one of the first to create an anti-aging skin care program using glycolic acid.  I featured  his products in my  book-  Fruit Acids for Fabulous Skin– and use them in my own skin care routinue.    They are  safe, uber effective and affordable.  In Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I want to  remind  you to avoid estrogen-based  skin care formulations.  There is no need to use dangerous anti-aging moisturizers especially when there safe and  better options.

This week Staness of  Menopause Makeover is hosting Fashion Flash.  I love her supportive and effective advice on weight control.  Want to know  your ideal weight?  Just enter your height and gender and the  number pops up  within seconds.  I was happy to learn that  I was  less than 7 pounds away.  That’s  a number I can handle.

Menopause Makeover also  has  a great selection of easy, delicious and health recipes.   This week I made her tilapea with cherry tomatoes and black olives.  Flavored with  a bit of white wine, olive oil and garlic, it clocked in at less than 250  calories  per delicious serving.

This week I picked up The Bag Lady Papers, a   small pink book with a big impact. Author   Alexandra Penney  had been  a well known lifestyle writer who  lost  her  entire life savings when she invested  them with Bernie Madoff.   Penney and I  shared a mentor  in Self  magazine founder Phyliss Starr Wilson and the events of  her life before and  after Madoff certainly hit home.  Her first book ” How to Make Love to a Man” was a huge  hit and she prudently saved and invested the earnings.  When she  became editor in chief  at Self, she  was the driving force behind   raising readership  and higher revenues.  While she enjoyed the perks of her  job– exotic travel,  legendary restaurants,  exciting parties and designer clothes,  she  made sure that her   savings were safe and growing.   Then one morning she woke up and everything was gone.

Penney started a blog  that was soon turned into  a small, moving and ultimately inspiring  book.  She weaves together  the arc of her career,  her surrent struggles to keep a roof over  her  head,   and  herl ists of what is important in a post -Madoff life .  But you don’t have to be a  Madoff vistim to relate to The Bag Lady Papers. Over the  past few years , I have seen my friends, neighbors and family members lose the jobs they loved.  Every month I see another store or restaurant close, the victim of a contracting economy. But  life  is marked by more than financial and professional  sink holes. And as the years go by we all experience  painful changes– divorce, death of a parent,  serious health problems and   her  lists of what  is and is not important is worth the price of the book.

This week  Staness of Menopause Makeover is hosting Fashion Flash.  Each  time  I  click on this site, I wish  it had  been there when I went through menopause.  It can be a hard and isolating  journey.  From the first day you realize that turtlenecks are no longer an option to  scary medical reports,  menopause  is a time when you need a smart, caring friend– and Menopause Makeover is  just that.   Staness  offers great  emotional  support and  state of the art  scientific  developments in an upbeat and supportive way.  The site is packed with  accurate, balanced advice as well as some of the best healthy recipes on the web.

Strand Bookstore in NYC  is  three  floors of  new and used books, all at discount.  Wandering through the aisles last week, I picked up a little biography of Max Factor, the Russian immigrant   who  many  have called the father of modern make-up.

Max Factor was already  famous in the  in Hollywood as a wig maker  when new technologies  demanded new types of makeup for the stars.  As the silent black and  white films evolved into color ‘talkies”, producers realized that a new type of foundation was needed.  Existing greasepaint products left a sheen on the skin that reflected nearby colors.  For example, if an actress was standing near green trees, her skin would take on a green hue.  Because it was so unflattering many stars including Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo and Carole Lombard refused to work in Technicolor.  Bette Davis was even suspended from Warner Brothers for turning down  the studios first color  film.  ( I love this stuff).

The man who developed  Technicolor personally asked Max Factor to come up with a solution.  After several years of intensive research, Factor and his sons developed  a foundation that while transparant and matte, was able to hide blenishes and imperfections. It was  called Pancake because it was packed like a little flat cake in a little pan.  Within a very short time ,  Max Factor pancake became both  the standard makeup for film and a top selling foundation for women around the world.  Driven by a real need, the beauty industry  came up with a unique and effective product.
